On the Docket: Budget Choices in a Topsy Turvy Economy

There are a number of hearings scheduled this week and next in the State Capitol worth noting. On Tuesday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the State Capitol, Room 4202, the Assembly Budget Committee will hold a hearing called “Budgets, Investment and California’s Economy.” Five panelists – among them a few economists and Legislative Analyst Mac Taylor – will take a look at the economic impact of budget cuts and tax increases, among a host of issues.

On Thursday, the Senate’s Budget Subcommittee #3 is tentatively scheduled to take up the Governor’s proposed cuts to a number of state departments, including the Department of Child Support Services and the Department of Social Services. The hearing will begin at 9:30 a.m. or upon adjournment of the Senate floor session. (SSI/SSP issues are no longer on that day’s agenda, we hear.) On Monday, April 12 in Room 4203, once floor session is done, the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee will take up some of California Forward’s proposals to modify the budget process.
