In recent years, state policymakers and voters have approved a number of policy changes intended to reduce California’s reliance on incarceration as well as to provide community-based alternatives to imprisonment and invest in communities. But even with this progress, the number of incarcerated adults is still persistently high, and California remains under a court order (put in place back in 2009) to reduce overcrowding in state prisons.

How can state and local policies go further in reducing incarceration in California? Policy Insights 2017, the California Budget & Policy Center’s annual conference on March 2, will feature an expert workshop on this topic. Participants include:
