SACRAMENTO, CA A new fact sheet from the California Budget & Policy Center underscores the potential consequences of the House budget framework, revealing how they would negatively impact residents in every congressional district across California. The proposed cuts threaten to undermine access to essential services such as health care, housing, nutrition assistance, and income support, exacerbating the challenges faced by families throughout the state who are already struggling with persistently high inflation and the rising cost of living.

“These proposed cuts, championed by Congressional Republicans, would be devastating for communities across the state and the political spectrum and shift significant costs to states,” said Chris Hoene, executive director of the California Budget & Policy Center. “By prioritizing tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, Republican lawmakers are choosing to slash vital programs that support the well-being of working families, seniors, children, and people with disabilities.”

The fact sheet highlights how reductions in key federal programs like Medi-Cal (California’s Medicaid program), CalFresh (SNAP/nutrition assistance), and other vital resources would affect every district in the state. These cuts would strip away crucial support for families, deepening poverty, widening racial and ethnic disparities, and making it more difficult for workers to maintain employment.

According to the data, every congressional district in California stands to lose critical services, with millions of Californians at risk of losing access to health coverage, food assistance, and educational support. These cuts would also reduce spending power for families, hurting local businesses and the economy in the process.

For example, in California’s 22nd Congressional District, where nearly 67% of residents rely on Medi-Cal, the cuts would mean taking critical care away from residents, including children, pregnant individuals, seniors, and people with disabilities. In California’s 41st District, nearly 71% of children are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals; taking meals away from children would further stretch family budgets.

The fact sheet provides a detailed look at the impact of proposed cuts in each district, showing how millions of Californians benefit from the programs that are at risk. These cuts would leave many without the support they rely on to meet basic needs, further entrenching inequality across the state.
