The California Budget & Policy Center was pleased to launch its new Policy Perspectives Speakers Series with “The State Budget Process and Key Issues to Watch for in 2017.” This event included two sessions:

Part I
Dollars and Democracy: An Introduction to the State Budget Process

This session was for those interested in learning about — or refreshing their knowledge of — the basics of California’s state budget process, including what happens when and the roles of the Governor, the Legislature, and the public. (View Part I below)

 

Part II
State Budget Preview: What to Expect in 2017

  • Frank J. Mecca, Executive Director, County Welfare Directors Association of California
  • Edwin Park, Vice President for Health Policy, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities
  • Chris Hoene, Executive Director, California Budget & Policy Center

Set against the backdrop of major changes expected at the federal level, this session looked ahead to the upcoming budget season. Panelists explored key debates that will shape budget choices at the national, state, and local levels and what’s at stake for low- and middle-income Californians. (View Part II below)
