The California Budget & Policy Center, a nonpartisan, research and analysis nonprofit committed to advancing public policies that improve the lives of Californians, released the following statement from Executive Director Chris Hoene following the release of Governor Newsom’s proposed 2022-23 state budget.

SACRAMENTO — A new report by the California Budget & Policy Center — Why Aren’t Corporations Paying Their Fair Share of Taxes? — finds corporations are paying less than half the amount in state taxes, as a share of their income, than they did just four decades ago. This is largely due to state policymakers’ decisions to cut tax rates and expand tax breaks for corporations.
Our hearts remain heavy as hate and violence threaten the health, safety, and well-being of our Asian and Asian American colleagues, family members, friends, and neighbors. We mourn the loss of lives in Atlanta, California, and across the nation. As racist and misogynistic violence robbed the lives of Asian women in Atlanta last week, and in California we see an escalation of brutal attacks on Asians and Asian Americans, we cannot forget that racism and violence against people from Asia and their descendants is woven into the fabric of our nation and California’s history.
